It can be pretty stressful and even cause blindness over time. So imagine that their eyes are literally glowing from the inside. The higher end of this range (460nm) produces a more blue color light, while the color shifts to purple approaching the lower end (420nm). Most actinic lighting for aquariums has a wavelength of about 420-460nm. Now I know in other animals that contain fluorescent proteins that every cell of the body will produce some of these.including the cells that make up the eyes. Blacklights and actinic lights both produce light from the bottom of the visible light spectrum (the BIV in ROY G BIV). These proteins fluoresce under certain wavelengths of light, blue-UV. The way the glofish company produces their fish is by inserting genes that encode for certain fluorescent proteins (green, red, purple etc). The bulbs I am referring to are called actinic. Don’t worry there is an alternative for you There is another type of bulb that causes the same glowing effects as a black-light, and it isn’t going to cause damage to your fish’s eyes. Normal fish aren't bothered by blue light or even black light that much but won't really be seen in an aquarium with just uv. Unfortunately, black-lights produce too much harmful UV rays to be used practically on aquariums. The benefit is that UV light tends to cause some materials to fluoresce. 370nm is just barely within our range of visible light, and is quite far into the violet spectrum, producing UVA rays which can potentially be harmful. I know the glofish company advocates that blacklight/blue light is safe for the fish but remember that the whole point of their business plan is to sell fish that "glow" under a certain spectrum of light(blue to uv). Normal fish arent bothered by blue light or even black light that much but wont really be seen in an aquarium with just uv. A black-light is essentially a fluorescent bulb that produces light in the 370nm range.
